Point 26- Narative Theories

Vladimir Propp stated that in most films and stories there are 6 main characters, The Villain, The Dispatcher, The Donner, The Helper, The Princess and The Hero. I am going to state what these are and the explain who they would be in our film.

The Villain- is the character who struggles against the hero in our film this will be the parents.

The Dispatcher- The character who invites the hero to eliminate the evil. Fame will be the dispatcher in our story.

The Donner- The character who offers some sort of help to the hero by providing an object(s) that will help the hero in his/her quest. The donor will also be the parents as they will provide the money for their leap to fame.

The Helper-The character who helps the hero fight against evil. The helper will be the first record label who sign them.

The Princess- The character who needs to be rescued from the evil villain. We will technically not have a princess in our story.

The Hero- The character who eliminates the villain and weds the princess. Our hero(s) will be the homeless boy and the wealthy boy.

Point 25- Film synopsis

The story of our film is going to be based around two characters who are from very different backgrounds. We will be introduced to our first character who is a homeless teenager and who has been on the streets for years. We will observe this character in the street with his guitar and we see he has great talent. However, the people in the film will not notice his talent and he will be ignored.
We will then meet our next character who is a teenager from a wealthy background. He has been getting musical lessons for years and is extremely good at music on every instrument you could possibly think of. However, this boy does not like the music which he is taught (classical music and choir singing) and he realises his love for rap. This is disapproved by his family and this forces him to run away for a night.
It is only when this boy is walking down the street after running away that he hears somebody playing a guitar. The guitar is so catchy and this boy has goes to pursue this music. He meets our first character and they begin to jam together. Its at this moment they realise they both have incredible musical capabilities.
They begin to meet up more and play music together. One day the homeless boy goes round to the wealthy boys house. The parents come home and kick the homeless boy out of the house and tell their son that they never want him to come round again. Its at this point the wealthy boy rebels again and runs away, this time for good. The two boys begin t0 pursue their musical dreams trying to get signed but have no luck. They boy get involved in drug use and have a major down for a part of the film.
They then get noticed by a minor music label and they get signed. People begin to notice their talent however they do not have the money to back themselves up. At this point, the parents of the wealthy boy apologise and tell them that they want to back them up. The rest of the film is the two boys passing up the ranks in music becoming more and more popular. By the end of the movie, the two boys are a well known duo who are popular at festivals and concerts.

Point 21 & 22 The Institutions for our Film and their Idents

The companies that we are going to use for exhibiting, production and distribution of our film are going to be either UK based or a company that works with independent films.

to produce our film we are going to use a UK based company Called Film4 Productions. It produced the independent film Four Lions, which is a British Dark Company.

The type of company that would distribute independent film about music which is similar to our film would be Fox Searchlight Pictures, this is a American producer for independent films. They distributed and produced the film Juno, and they are a branch of 20th Century Fox, this show that we should use Fox Searchlight Pictures for distribution .

We will exhibit our film at the Sundance Film Festival. this is a popular place to exhibit independent films a well know films like Napoleon Dynamite and Reservoir dogs. We can also consider getting Netflix to exhibit our films as well, because the website is used my a mass of people.

Point 18 A Good Film Opening

A good film opening catches the viewers intention instantly, so that they are focused from the start of the. It causes the viewer to have a good view of the film right from the start. An example of this is Lion King, this opening gives a good incite of what will happen in the rest of the film, they have managed to draw the viewer straight into the film by opening with a catchy song. Another good opening to a film is Up, this gives depth to the film showing what has happened in the past before the story begins.

Point 17 What Makes an Opening Sequence Good

We have created this mood-board with images that we have found in magazines. We have chosen these images because they relate to our theme, which is independent film about music. So related to this we have images of musicians. We have also put on the style of font that we might use. we have images of negativity people standing back to back with folded arms this will shows the conflict between people. We also have images of abstract and pop art work that we are going to try and include in our film.

Opening scene analyzation Point 14

At the opening scene of Pulp Fiction there is a man and woman sitting in a caffe having breakfast and coffee and discussing, the man has a cigarette in his hand and hiss feet up on the chair looking confident. the lady is siting neatly opposite him. The camera angle is a long shot so that they can get both of them in the shot and the table. We know that they are in a caffe because of the props that they have used such as the table and seats are stereotypical of what you would find in a caffe and sources, salt and pepper, sugar, plates and coffee cups on the table. The sound also shows that the are in a caffe because of the catering of cutlery the talking of people and the distant sound of music in the background. 35 seconds into the clip a waitress comes over and there is an close up on her face at a low angle to show what the man and woman would see as they look at her, she asks if they want anymore coffee, she is wearing an apron which also setts the scene of being in a coffee shop and then leaves at 44 seconds and goes back to the shot at the start. At 58 seconds the camera angle changes to a mid shot of to what the man would be seeing when he is looking at the girl opposite. And soon after it changes angle again at 1:02min, this is of over the shoulder of the girl looking at the man. At 1:10min it goes back to the view of what the man is seeing when looking at the woman opposite. It then goes back to the shot Originally they are doing this to keep the viewer still focused on the scene and when changing the camera it causes the viewer to be more engaged in the film.

Point 12 Things To Include For Genre

We are making a independent movie based on music, so one of our key factors that we will need in the film is music, we will most likely use music that we have created and we we will also use soundtracks in the background that we will edit into the film after words. Similar to the film Begin Again.

Point 11 Film Genre Research Traits

An independent film is a film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system, in addition to being produced and distributed by independent entertainment agencies.

Examples of independent films: train spotting, terminator, Mad Max, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, To Kill A Mockingbird, Pulp Fiction. Superbad.

We have chosen to do a independent film because are film will be low budget so this will be suitable for us. This mean that we will have to shoot are film in local surroundings, and use the facilities that we have. We are going to use non- copy rited music in our soundtrack as well as some live music too.

Pitch

Our video is and independent film. We chose this genre because it is quite original and it sounded cool and fun to create. We thought it was a good idea to have both filmed music, by musicians and added music that we edit onto the clip. This genre really caught our eyes. Our filming is inspired by the film Juno, as we want our clip to have stop frame sketch theme. However in place of light hearted characteristics of Juno, we will have a more urban theme throughout.
